Diamonds in the Rough…

Written by Jennifer Covello

Here I am again talking about my favorite show, American Idol.  As many of you are aware, my pick, Siobhan Magnus, was voted off a few weeks ago. At the time of this writing, the top three have been identified:  Casey, Crystal, and Lee.  idol-logoAnd for the first time in my Idol watching history, I am not excited about any of them.  I wanted Siobhan to be up there and somehow, the remaining contestants just don’t seem like American Idols.

I know there are some of you out there who are disagreeing with that statement.  But hear me out.  I didn’t say they didn’t have talent.  I just don’t see star quality in them.  Where’s the pizzazz?  Where’s the entertainment?  Where’s the heart in what they’re doing?

Ok.ok.. in all fairness, Crystal is probably the only one who exudes life when she sings.  She is true to herself and her style is appealing.  Casey…let’s face it.  He’s a pretty good singer, but he’s there because of his looks (and you’ll get no argument from me on that one!)  Then there’s Lee.  He’s a good singer too.  But here’s the thing.  I think he could be a great singer, similar to Daughtry or even David Cook, but he just looks like he’s in pain on that stage.  There’s rarely a smile on his face.  He never looks like he is enjoying himself.  It’s like he is trying so hard to do everything right, that he’s forgetting that this is supposed to be fun.  If this is his passion, his purpose, why does he look so uncomfortable?  Why does it look like he’s struggling to truly enjoy himself along this journey?  We all see the talent and potential, does he?

How many times have you encountered people like Lee?  You see the diamond that could emerge and you hope you can ‘coax’ it out them with your encouragement and support, but they don’t believe it.  It’s frustrating and sad at the same time, because you see how great these people could be.

Or, maybe this description fits you?  Are you one of those people that others can see more for you than you can see for yourself?  Are you, like Lee, struggling to embrace the talents and gifts you have been blessed with?

I think that Lee does not believe he deserves to be up on that stage, that he’s ‘good enough’.  Maybe that’s how some of you feel too.  “I’m not worthy to really shine.“  “I don’t deserve the success that everyone sees for me.”  Whatever the reason, it’s time to let it go and embrace the gifts you’ve been given and use them to drive your success in whatever your passion is.

My hope for Lee (and for you as well) is that he recognizes that he has been blessed with a talent and to trust himself enough to really start to show it off.  Then and only then, will America believe that he could be an American Idol.

What’s holding you back from shining?  Are you the diamond in the rough everyone talks about?  Do tell!
